Alamillo Bridge

Seville, Spain

The Alamillo bridge, designed by architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava, is remarkable by its design and its large dimensions. It is a single span cable-stayed bridge whose deck is supported by just one pylon at one of its ends. The deck weight is balanced just slopping the pylon 32º in opposite direction, with no back cables.

The deck is a central hexagonal steel box with transverse ribs cantilevering from its medium plane and supporting reinforced concrete slabs. The pylon is composite, formed by a steel box partially filled of concrete.
